ABOUT THE FIRM

First Bay Architecture

Founded in 1995, First Bay Architecture (FBA) is a design-driven firm known for its distinctive style and commitment to craftsmanship. With offices in Berkeley and The Sea Ranch, California, FBA provides comprehensive architectural services—from pre-schematic design (site selection, zoning evaluations, etc.) to post-construction evaluation—ensuring a seamless and thoughtful approach at every stage of a project.

At the heart of FBA’s philosophy is the creation of aesthetic, functional, and well-crafted spaces that respond thoughtfully to both the unique characteristics of the site and the aspirations of our clients.

  • Led by Principal Caitlin Lempres Brostrom, the FBA team fosters a collaborative design process, encouraging client involvement throughout all phases of a project. We believe in transforming visions into reality, blending artistry with practicality to create spaces that are both beautiful and livable.

Using a combination of hand-drawn sketches and state-of-the-art software, we provide clients with a clear and tangible vision of their projects before construction begins.

  • FBA specializes in residential architecture, offering expertise in:

    • Custom home design

    • Historic renovations

    • Precision remodels

    • Custom furnishings

    • Garden structures and small-scale projects

Our clients are private individuals and families seeking tailored solutions—whether designing a new home from the ground up, restoring a historic property, or refining a single space with bespoke details.

At First Bay Architecture, our mission is simple: to turn dreams into beautifully crafted, enduring realities.

ABOUT THE ARCHITECT

Caitlin Lempres Brostrom

Founder and Principal

Caitlin Lempres Brostrom's passion for architecture was ignited at an early age. Born while her parents were architecture students at the University of California, Berkeley, she grew up surrounded by some of the most inquisitive and influential minds in the field. This environment of critical thinking and design exploration naturally led her to pursue her own architectural path. She earned her Master of Architecture degree from UC Berkeley in 1990.

After gaining experience with esteemed Bay Area firms—including Jacobson, Silverstein & Winslow Architects and Siegel & Strain Architects—Caitlin founded First Bay Architecture in 1996. Her practice is dedicated to thoughtful, responsive design that reflects the unique character of the region.

Beyond her architectural work, Caitlin has contributed to the field through research and writing. In 2012, Princeton Architectural Press published Frames for Living: The Houses of William Wurster, a book she co-authored with Professor Richard Peters. This project, written over two decades, presents the biography and monograph of renowned California Modernist William W. Wurster, complementing and informing her own design philosophy.

When she’s not collaborating with clients on their homes, Caitlin enjoys riding horses, hiking the Northern California coast with her husband and dogs, playing tennis, and traveling with her family.
